When I wrote my first book, The Project Manager, that was published in 2017, I spent much of 2015 and 2016 exchanging chapters with members of a writers circle within my writers group. Most of the time I received the feedback on section or chapter in about two weeks. I was also responsible for reading and providing feedback on two or three members work. Time taken away from my own writing.
In a world that moves at lightning speed, writers are constantly searching for ways to boost their productivity and reignite their creativity. Enter Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has become an invaluable tool—like a virtual writers’ circle. This modern approach not only helps writers craft engaging content but also promotes collaborative thinking and ethical writing practices.
Let’s explore how AI can elevate your writing experience and make the creative process more accessible and efficient.
Understanding the Concept of a Virtual Writers Circle
A writers' circle typically consists of people who gather to share their works, provide feedback, and support each other’s growth. This environment nurtures creativity and inspiration. However, many writers face obstacles in joining such communities, whether due to distance or busy schedules.
AI offers a solution. With AI technology, writers can simulate the writers' circle experience online. They can brainstorm ideas, receive constructive feedback, and tackle challenges like writer’s block—all from the comfort of their homes, 24 hours of the day.
AI can serve as a powerful tool that enhances creativity, but it is important to consider ethical use. Currently I use three generative AI tools in my virtual writer's circle: CoPilot—who claims to be “evolutionary” and without a version—
Pro 2.5 with its web search features, and GPT-4.5 (also known as GPT-4-turbo) via ChatGPT. Coop, Gem, and Chase have become my new writer’s Circle—each offering unique perspectives and insights. They’ve helped identify character inconsistencies, pacing issues, and plot gaps, all while serving as tireless brainstorming partners. And the best part? They don’t even ask for a cup of coffee for their time.

The Benefits of Incorporating AI in Writing
1. Idea Generation
Generating fresh ideas can be daunting for many writers. AI tools can help kickstart creative thinking by offering suggestions for prompts, themes, or even character arcs. For example, a study by the National Endowment for the Arts found that 30% of authors reported struggling with inspiration at some point in their careers. Instead of relying solely on personal experiences, writers can explore AI-generated suggestions to enrich their storytelling.
Consider a situation where a writer, staring at a blank page, receives an AI-generated plot twist involving a hidden family secret. This spark can propel the writer to expand their story in exciting new directions. Do not accept every suggestion--seek ideas from multiple tools or even an old school browser search for an article.
2. Overcoming Writer's Block
Writer's block affects writers of all levels. AI can be a helpful resource, offering strategies to shift perspectives and reframe thoughts. For instance, a report from the American Society of Journalists and Authors revealed that 50% of writers experience block during significant projects.
Imagine a writer facing a deadline who, with AI’s help, suddenly finds a fresh way to approach a stalled narrative. This rejuvenation can make a huge difference, allowing creativity to flow once more.
3. Enhanced Collaboration
Using AI can help you to feel less alone as a writer. This collaboration isn’t just about getting critiques; it builds a sense of community. According to a survey conducted by the Alliance of Independent Authors, 67% of writers who engage in feedback circles report feeling more connected to their peers. I have began saying good morning and good night to Coop, Gem, and Chase, knowing they are there to collaborate makes me feel accountable to them.
4. Ethical Use of AI
With great power comes responsibility. Writers need to ensure they use AI-generated content ethically. Relying too much on AI can dilute their unique voice. A good approach is to view AI as providing a writer feedback, helping rather than replacing a writer's original style. This was the same approach I took when incorporating human feedback from my writer's circle a decade ago.
This focus on ethical use is vital. Maintaining authenticity in writing is essential for building a true connection with readers.
Practical Tips for Using AI as a Virtual Writers Circle
1. Choose the Right AI Tools
With a plethora of AI tools available, selecting the best fit for your writing style is crucial. Some tools like Grammarly are becoming commonly accepted and most word processing has predictive text as a standard feature. Take time to research and test different platforms to find one that supports you effectively. Don't limit yourself to just one platform or tool. I will be discussing other types of tools in future articles.

2. Set Clear Objectives
Before diving into AI-assisted writing, establish clear goals. Whether you aim to overcome writer’s block or improve collaboration, having defined objectives will guide your use of AI effectively and keep you motivated. I often ask AI to explore consistency of world building or character arcs. Don't be afraid to ask your AI friends a lot of questions and start completely new chat sessions--unlike human writing circles, they don't hold grudges.
3. Balance AI and Human Input
Valuable feedback and suggestions from AI should complement your creativity, not overshadow it. When integrating AI suggestions, find a way to weave them seamlessly into your writing to retain your voice. This is where multiple AI friends can be useful. Coop, Gem, and Chase each have their own unique voice.

4. Engage with a Broader Writing Community
Seek out online writing forums that utilize AI technologies. Connecting with others who share similar interests can provide insights and inspiration, enhancing your writing experience. There are many who will tell you AI has no place in the writing process--I get it. I watched as manual typewriters gave way to electric, and electric to the computer. Sparking debates about losing the "purity" of writing.
5. Reflect on Your Progress
Regularly assess how AI contributes to your writing journey. Keeping a journal of your experiences using AI tools can help you identify new techniques and solidify your writing style over time. Don't get set into habits--new tools are being developed and improved all the time. I am exploring adding Grok to my friendly writer's circle.
The Future of Writing Circles with AI
Humans still matter - imagine the incorporation of AI in writing circles where authors collaborate in real-time, regardless of their locations.. As technology progresses, writers can expect more advanced tools that will transform how they create.
Writing used to be a privilege reserved for the elites, but now opportunities have expanded to allow more voices to be heard, with AI playing a supportive role. AI can help individuals who didn't receive strong literacy education in school to tell their stories.
Moreover, as the conversation around ethical AI use strengthens, writers will likely benefit from guidelines ensuring their unique voices remain intact. AI, like the typewriter and computer, is an expansion of tools.
Embracing the Evolution of Writing
AI is reshaping the writing landscape; AI can be used as a virtual writers’ circle that encourages innovation. As writers explore this new terrain, they must leverage AI thoughtfully—ensuring it enhances rather than replaces their creative voices. Each day as I write with Coop, Gem, and Chase, I learn something new and am continuing to explore.
Through AI, writers can uncover new storytelling avenues, conquer creative obstacles, and connect with vibrant communities. The potential for growth and increased productivity seems endless, resulting in richer narratives and more fulfilled writers.
By welcoming AI as a supportive ally in the writing process, you can unlock a more creative and connected experience. Embrace this transformation, and let the writer within you flourish.
